Louisbourg is 63 km's from Gowrie House. Turn right onto Shore Road. Turn right onto Fraser Ave. At the lights, turn left onto Main - continue straight, this will eventually become Highway 125. Take Exit to Highway 22 (Louisbourg).

Highland Village Museum
The Highland Village overlooks the spectacular Bras d'Or Lakes and depicts the life of Gaelic-speaking Scots in Nova Scotia. For more information visit

The Highland Village is located in Iona. Iona is 61 km's from Gowrie House. Turn right onto Shore Road. Turn right onto Fraser Ave. Turn left onto Main at lights. Take 105 W towards Baddeck. Take exit 18 onto the 223.

Baddeck
Baddeck is a quaint village situated on the Bras d'Or Lakes and was the summer home of Alexander Graham Bell for 37 years. This museum houses artifacts and photographs from the inventor's life. The Village of Baddeck also has an attractive waterfront, boardwalks and lovely shops. For more information visit

Baddeck is 61km's from Gowrie House. Turn right onto Shore Road. Continue straight down to the Entrance of Highway 105. Continue straight to Baddeck (There are 3 exits to Baddeck).

Glace Bay
Glace Bay was a community built on coal. Be sure to visit the Miners' Museum and the Marconi National Historic Site. The miners' museum focuses on the contribution of the coal miner and coal. Experience life in a coal mine first hand. The Miners' Village features a company store and a home from the late 19th century. The Marconi site marks the place from which Guglielmo Marconi sent the first wireless transatlantic signal in 1902. Click here for more information on the Marconi site. Glace Bay is 74 km's from Gowrie. Turn right onto Shore Road Turn right onto Fraser Ave. Turn left onto Main at lights. Continue straight and this will become Highway 125. Follow straight to the end. Turn right at lights (Mayflower Mall will be on your right) onto Highway 4. Continue straight down Highway 4 to Glace Bay.

Sydney
Sydney was booming city at the turn of the century with the construction of the largest self-contained steel plant in North America. Today visitors can enjoy shopping, movies, a casino and a lively waterfront. Sydney is also home to Cossitt House and Jost House, two of the city's oldest historic houses that have been turned into museums. The downtown is also home to St. Patrick's Church, a tiny stone structure which is the oldest Catholic church in Cape Breton.
Directions
Sydney is 26 km's from Gowrie House. Turn right onto Shore Road. Turn right onto Fraser Ave. Turn left onto Main at lights. Continue straight and this will become Highway 125 which leads right to Sydney. For the downtown area, take exit 6b into Sydney River and continue straight to Sydney. For shopping, continue to end of 125 for Mayflower Mall (turn right). For the Hospital, take George Street Exit.

Sydney's boardwalk is just one place to stroll along the waters edge, there is also a boardwalk located in North Sydney, very close to the Newfoundland Ferry.
Nova Scotia has many towns of historical signifigance such as Glace Bay, North Sydney and Sydney Mines.
The Cabot Trail provides the most scenic route to drive on Cape Breton Island and is the image most often used to promote Nova Scotia, and its entrance is located less than an hour from Gowrie House.
North Sydney
North Sydney is an historic seaport community on Sydney Harbour. It is home to the Marine Atlantic Terminals which offer ferry service to Newfoundland. Dockside ceilidhs take place on the community's waterfront during the summer. Archibald's Wharf offers shops, a bandshell, a playground and boardwalks with views of Sydney Harbour.

North Sydney is located 5 km's from Gowrie House. Turn right onto Shore Road. Pass the Ferry Terminal. At top of hill turn right and cross overpass. Turn Left at the lights.

Cabot Trail
This world famous scenic drive is your to discover! Named for famous explorer, John Cabot, the Cabot Trail caresses the rocky shores of the Island's northern shore. The beginning of the Cabot Trail is about 60km's from Gowrie House. Turn right onto Shore Road. Continue straight down to the Entrance of Highway 105. Continue straight towards Baddeck Take Exit 11 at St. Ann's onto Cabot Trail.

Two Rivers Wildlife Park
This 500-acre park is home to many native animals including black bears, moose, deer and cougars. The park overlooks the beautiful Mira River.
Directions
The park is located off Rte 327, west to Grand Mira North Rd.

Sydney Mines Heritage Museum & Fossil Centre
Housed in the former railway station, the Sydney Mines Heritage Museum works to preserve the area's heritage and history. Some of that heritage includes steel making and coal mining. In July 2001, the museum opened its fossil center which offers guided tours of the fossil rich coastline of the Sydney Coalfield. For more information visit
